Ottumwa Science Cafe

Come and join the conversation!
Brandi Janssen, PhD, of the University of Iowa and director of Iowa's Center for Agricultural Safety and Health (I-CASH) will host this informal discussion.

Science Café coming to a coffeehouse near you!
On Tuesday, June 2nd, the Vine Coffeehouse will be hosting a Science Café about genetically modified organisms (GMO’s). A science café is a live—and lively—event in a casual setting: Cafés have been held in pubs, restaurants, actual cafes, and even in a bowling alley. There is no stuffy lecture or slideshow—the speaker presents the science in a community friendly atmosphere where everyone is welcome.
Please join us for this upcoming Science Café where Dr. Brandi Janssen, PhD, from the University of Iowa and director of Iowa’s Center for Agricultural Safety and Health (I-CASH) will be discussing GMO’s a topic many want to know about!

Progress or Poison? The Science and Controversy Behind Genetically Modified Organisms.
Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) have been both heralded as cornerstones of the new age of production agriculture and denigrated as harmful to environmental and human health. This talk will address the science and politics behind GMOs as well as the social controversies that have arisen.

About Brandi Janssen, PhD
Brandi Janssen conducts qualitative, ethnographic research examining production practices in alternative agriculture. Trained as an anthropologist, Dr. Janssen’s recent work considers the complex social processes necessary to build robust local food networks. These include the labor associated with rural food production and processing; the challenges producers face when supplying institutional markets for local food; and the complex relationships between small-scale producers and their larger-scaled conventional neighbors. In addition, she is interested in the ways that culture, policy, and socio-economic structures contribute to environmental and social vulnerabilities among farm operators, farm workers, and rural residents.

As director of Iowa’s Center for Agricultural Safety and Health (I-CASH), she oversees the work of a statewide coalition of public and private organizations devoted to reducing injuries and fatalities on Iowa farms.
